To mark its 50th anniversary, the BMW M performance branch is coming up with an all-new SUV concept that will use modern hybrid technologies to create the most powerful vehicle yet.

Learn more about BMW’s M branch as well as the exterior and interior design and powertrain of the XM concept.

BMW M, 50 Years of History

The performance brand was founded in 1972 under the name BMW Motorsport GmbH. Since then, it was recognized as a benchmark in terms of international automotive performance.

The logo consists of three lines: blue for BMW, red for sport and purple for the fusion of the two. The range has seen the birth of several sports cars over the years, including:

  • M1
  • M535i
  • M5
  • M635CSi
  • M6

This time, the new XM concept is offered as an SUV.

XM BMW Concept Car: A Sculpted Design

The XM Concept is a massive SUV with a low, sporty stance and dynamically designed 23-inch wheels. The first characteristic of the XM BMW Concept car that leaps before our mind’s eye is its sculpted and aggressive lines.

It mixes classic M-model features with some of the more futuristic ones found in the latest electric iX model.

It also features BMW’s traditional nostrils, which are even wider than on the latest models and are framed by LED lights. As for the headlights, they are smaller and more incisive, taking the form of two small inverted triangles on each side.

At the rear, the LED lights are elongated horizontally and end in a hook on the fenders. The rear is also set with four trapezoidal exhaust tips. The singular shape of the roof and tailgate is another distinctive aspect of this new concept, which shows both a slightly receding roof at the rear and one that extends to the sides.

By the way, if the fashion is for a black roof, BMW reverses the trend with a contrasting lighter roof.

BMW XM Concept: An Impressive Motorization

For the 50th anniversary of BMW M, a vehicle that stands out from the crowd was needed, and that’s what the XM concept represents, which will be the most powerful car to date. It is the plug-in hybrid technology that will allow this new vehicle to offer even more power.

The combustion engine will be the brand’s twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8, coupled with an electric motor, a powertrain that will develop an impressive 750 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque!

As for the hybrid motorization, an electric range of 50 km has been announced. The total range has not yet been publicized. Technical details and pricing for the BMW XM have yet to be revealed, so stay tuned!

A Sumptuous Interior

Just like the exterior, BMW is creating a mix of classic, even vintage, features and much more modern traits. The interior consists of two rows of seats.

Up front, leather is at the forefront, along with some materials such as copper. The brown color and sport seats recall older models and evoke a certain nostalgia. Of course, the controls are driver-centered.

In the back, it’s quite the opposite, as Guillaume Rivard describes in Le Guide de l’auto:

“The atmosphere is closer to a lounge with seats mixing black leather and
dark turquoise quilted velvet as well as thick floor mats.”

Looking up, one also discovers a 3-dimensional roof illuminated by tri-color mood lighting.

As for technology, the huge curved screen contrasts with the vintage style of the front of the vehicle. The screen houses the digital instrumentation as well as the multimedia system, which can be expected to offer several functionalities, among which, it will certainly include:

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • SiriusXM
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • High-end audio system

The production model is expected to be revealed by the end of 2022 with additional details regarding the equipment as well as the BMW configurator. As for the design, it should nevertheless carry 80 to 90% of the elements unveiled so far.
